Captain Trevor and the Crew of the Easter B haul a giant bluefin tuna ov...

Image
Over the side, a giant bluefin makes its final spiral and then with a thud hits the deck. You can tell by the sound this is a heavy fish, and you would be right. 144lbs! It can sometimes take as little as 10 minutes, and some times as much as 4 hours (dont ask me how I know) to put one of these fish on the deck. My personal experience, in the 150+ lb weight class, is that you tend to lose almost as many as you catch. Some more skilled anglers than myself, may have better luck.

Dorado Smackdown!

Image
The Dorado, or "mahi-mahi" or "dolphinfish" is a surface-dwelling fish found 15-100 miles off-shore in waters outside of San Diego. By whatever name, it is one of the most colorful fish in the ocean. Their shimmering and iridescent skin give off green and blue hues unlike any fish you have ever seen.

Six-Pack Charters VS. Party Boats

Image
People often ask me, “Why is going on a private or open-party six-pack charter so much more expensive, then say buying a couple of tickets on a big party boat?” I have decided to delve into this common question and explain why private six-pack charters are the VIP ride of the fleet. SPEED & RANGE  - The number one reason to choose a six-pack fishing boat is that they go fast. We are talking a cruising speed of 15 knots and flank speed of 21+ knots (for when you need to haul ass three miles to hop on your buddies radio call-in). What this translates too, is more fishing time, and less travel time. Or… even better yet, the same travel time, and extended range. Either way, you win by having more time with your hook in the water. HEADCOUNT  - When you hop on one of the open party boats out of Point Loma or Mission Bay, you can expect to be joined by up to 20-60 of your closest friends, shoulder to shoulder for the rest of the day. Not so on a six-pack fishing boat, it’s only you and

Best San Diego Tuna Fishing Pictures of 2019

Image
2019 was an epic year for Tuna fishing here in local San Diego waters. We got off to a late start but made up for it by having a late-season that lasted all the way until mid-November. What made this year especially awesome was the appearance of LARGE Bluefin Tuna in our local waters! In this week’s post, I am going to show off some of the best pictures taken during the 2019 season! So without further ado, let’s get started! The fish you see furthest back was close to 300 pounds and was the biggest bluefin we caught all summer. Landed in late August, this monster put up a 3-hour fight, and the lucky angler who caught this fish was outweighed by his catch by almost 140 lbs. This was caught on the vessel Avery Rose, by Captain Reeve, one of our very competent USCG certified Captains! Can you say WIDE OPEN TUNA! The day this picture was taken all six anglers had limits by noon and came home early, exhausted and full. Captain Trevor turned one of these fish into a fresh plate of Sash

The Coronado Islands in Mexico is a great winter fishing spot!

Image
Grab your U.S. passport and let’s head south to Mexican water to visit  Islas Coronado (The Coronado Islands). Private Six Pack and Four Pack Sport Fishing Charters to these islands are available throughout the winter months and provide a fast bite and diverse fishing species when U.S. waters are cold and the fishing is slow. This is what makes it such a popular destination for American anglers! There is some prep work to be done before you go though! Get your Mexican Fishing License and Bio-Bracelet First You will need to obtain your Mexican Fishing permit  HERE , and be sure to also obtain the BIO BRACELET that is optional in the check out process. Check with your Captain to make sure that you have the right paperwork in hand before you go. And, let me reiterate this, you MUST have a CURRENT U.S. PASSPORT in hand to go on this trip. We check and so does the Mexican Navy. Ok, now lets talk fishing. The great thing about fishing the Coronado Islands is the variety! If you have
